What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) was first made popular in the early 90’s when the Gracie Family from Brazil began defeating martial artists from a wide range of different martial arts backgrounds via challenge matches and Mixed Martial Arts competitions.  BJJ has since become a key component of modern Mixed Martial Arts training.  BJJ is primarily a grappling art, with the goal being to bring the fight to the ground and finishing the fight by way of submission such as a chokehold or a joint lock.  BJJ encourages sparring against a resisting opponent.  This method of training gives its practitioners the opportunity to test their skills and develop them under more realistic conditions.

What is 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu?

10th Planet Jiu Jitsu is the unique style of No-Gi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu developed by world renowned Jiu Jitsu practitioner Eddie Bravo, under the tutelage of his instructor Jean Jacques Machado.  The 10th Planet style of Jiu Jitsu is particularly well known for its highly evolved rubber guard system, as well as other techniques such as the lockdown and twister.

While traditional BJJ focuses on utilizing the sleeves and collar of the gi (the traditional Jiu Jitsu uniform) as handles to set up the techniques, the 10th Planet style of Jiu Jitsu is specifically designed for NO-GI training.  That is, the reliance on sleeves and collars as a means of control is done away with.  Instead, the utilization of over and under hooks and clinching are used to execute the techniques.  This entirely different approach translates very well into applications for Mixed Martial Arts and real world self-defense.

The focus at 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Montreal is always on developing excellent technique as a means to overcoming stronger and more athletic opponents.  To get started in training, all you really need is a pair of shorts, a t-shirt, and an open mind.

Kickboxing

Our Kickboxing Program is based primarily on the arts of Boxing and Muay Thai. Boxing and Muay Thai are widely regarded as the most effective forms of striking. Western Boxing has, without a doubt, developed punching into a sophisticated science as well as an art. Muay Thai provides additional weapons in the form of vicious kicks, knees, and elbows. Our Program utilizes focus mitt and Thai pad drills in order to develop precision striking and solid technique. In addition, we also incoporate strength and cardio training into the regimen. The Kickboxing Program is taught by Stephane Fleury. As both competitor and coach, Stephane has well over 20 years of experience at both the amateur and professional levels in Boxing. Stephane's style of teaching stresses the importance of solid fundamentals and his attention to detail is amazing. Whether you are a complete beginner or have experience, Stephane has the tools to up your striking game.

To get started, you will need at a minimum, a pair of hand wraps and boxing gloves. A mouth guard, groin cup, and shin guards are also highly recommended.

Kids Jiu Jitsu

There is not a martial art out there that is more functional and fun than Jiu Jitsu. The Jiu Jitsu for Kids Program teaches the same techniques that the adults learn, but with more emphasis on positioning than submissions. Your child will learn truly functional techniques that will stay with them a lifetime. Many of the more "traditional martial arts" market themselves as developing respect and discipline. The parents love this. But the sad truth is that their children are learning techniques that, for the most part, do not work in any real life situations. Jiu Jitsu, however, does work. This is why practically ALL professional mixed martial artists train in Jiu Jitsu.

Students in the Kids Jiu Jitsu Program require a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gi or a Judo gi. Belt ranking is a part of the Program. The 12:00 pm class on Saturdays is for kids only. The 11:00 am class on Sundays is open to adults and kids.
